At 20:29 this evening, Palencia in northern Spain lost the sun for one minute and forty-two seconds. Zaragoza got eighty-three seconds. Valencia got about sixty, with the sun already low over the Mediterranean. Across the border in Montesinho, totality lasted twenty-six seconds and the sun sat three degrees above the horizon, which means most people there watched it through trees.
It was the first total solar eclipse over mainland Europe since 11 August 1999.
I know that date. I was standing in a field in Hungary.
The field was called Ozora
Solipse ran from 9 to 15 August 1999 on an estate near Ozora, roughly 140 kilometres southwest of Budapest, directly under the path of totality. Somewhere between fifteen and twenty thousand people came. On 11 August, at about ten to one in the afternoon, the sky went out for two minutes and twenty-two seconds.
It was good. That is the short version, and after twenty-seven years it is still the accurate one.

Solipse never came back to Hungary. There was one sequel, near Lusaka in Zambia in June 2001, timed to another eclipse and opened by the country's Minister of Tourism, which tells you how seriously people took the format. The Ozora site then stayed quiet until 2004, when O.Z.O.R.A. Festival began its annual run on the same ground. It now sells around thirty thousand tickets and, by most estimates, holds closer to sixty or seventy thousand bodies.
Twenty-seven years is a long time to wait for a shadow
You will read everywhere that Europe saw nothing for twenty-seven years. That is not quite true, and the exceptions are worth having. On 20 March 2015 the moon's shadow crossed the Faroe Islands and Svalbard. On 29 March 2006 it clipped the far southeastern edge of the continent after crossing Libya and Turkey. Both count. Neither touched the mainland, which is why the wait felt total even when it was not.
The 1999 eclipse was the last of the twentieth century and the second millennium, and continental Europe had not seen one since 1961. Over 350 million people were positioned to watch. Cornwall booked itself solid and then clouded over, with only a one in three chance of clear sky to begin with. When the light went, the British national grid recorded a 3,000 megawatt surge, the largest of its kind at the time. An entire country put the kettle on in the dark.
What was in your pocket at Ozora
This is the part that ages strangely. Not the eclipse. The pockets.
A phone, if you had one, and by 1999 plenty of people did. The Nokia 3210 had launched that March and went on to sell around 160 million units. In a Hungarian field it was a torch with a clock in it. You could not call anyone, because nobody had signal and nobody had each other's numbers written down anyway.
So you found people the old way: you picked a landmark and a time, and if you missed it you missed it. Sometimes for a day. Sometimes for the whole week. Nobody experienced this as a hardship, because there was no alternative to compare it against.
A camera with twenty-four exposures on it. You got the prints back two weeks later, at home, and four of them were a thumb. One was the eclipse and it looked like a streetlight. The first camera phone existed by then, the Kyocera VP-210, released in Japan in May 1999, holding twenty photos and sending two frames a second over one network in one country. Today you can generate a picture of an eclipse that never happened, and the real one still looks like a streetlight.
Cash, in forints, because there was no other way to buy anything. Paper maps. And a Discman, which skipped.
The music cost a room
Goa trance had already peaked commercially around 1996 and 1997, and by 1999 it was fragmenting into the harder thing that became psytrance. Making it took hardware. An Access Virus B, the virtual analog synth at the centre of that sound, cost 1,279 pounds for the keyboard and 899 for the desktop version. A Roland MC-303 groovebox, the budget entry point, was 699 dollars. Cubase VST started at 329 pounds, and its 1999 update introduced VSTi, the first standard that let software instruments run inside the timeline at all.
Sets went out on DAT tape, not vinyl. Vinyl warped in the heat and humidity of the parties this scene came from, and CDJs did not exist yet. Parties were advertised on photocopied flyers passed hand to hand. If you wanted a track and had a modem, three to five megabytes took you five to fifteen minutes at 56k.
1999 was also the year the floor moved. Napster launched that June, built by a nineteen year old, and the RIAA sued it in December. MP3.com went public in July and raised over 370 million dollars, the largest tech IPO to that point. American CD shipments peaked that same year at over 900 million units and never recovered.
Now the numbers are ridiculous. Suno users generate more than seven million songs a day, which is roughly a Spotify catalogue every two weeks. It costs ten dollars a month. Since March 2026 you can upload fifteen seconds of your own voice and get a singer back. On Deezer, AI-generated tracks went from about ten percent of daily uploads in January 2025 to over half by June 2026, peaking near ninety thousand a day, while those tracks account for one to three percent of actual listening and Deezer says up to 85 percent of the streams they did get were fraudulent.
So the machine is producing a Spotify every fortnight and almost nobody is listening to it. In 1999 the bottleneck was that making music was expensive. It is not obvious that removing the bottleneck was the same as solving the problem.
The courts are catching up. A Munich court ruled for GEMA against Suno on 31 July 2026, on training and on outputs, with fines of up to 250,000 euros per violation. Warner has settled with Suno and Udio, Universal with Udio only, Sony with neither.
Nobody in that field was worried about AI
Here is the part that still surprises me. The Matrix had opened in American cinemas on 31 March 1999, four months before the eclipse, and told a very large audience exactly one story about machine intelligence. Morpheus explains that humanity marvelled at its own magnificence as it gave birth to AI, that nobody knows who struck first, and that it was us who scorched the sky.
Ray Kurzweil published The Age of Spiritual Machines in January of the same year, predicting that by 2019 there would be widespread reports of computers passing the Turing test, and that 4,000 dollars would buy the processing power of one human brain.
None of it was on anyone's mind at Ozora. The thing people actually feared in 1999 was Y2K: that the calendar would end civilisation. Between 300 and 600 billion dollars went into fixing it worldwide. On 1 January 2000, nothing happened.
And the field was right to ignore AI, because in 1999 there was nothing to ignore. Attendance at AI conferences shows the second AI winter bottoming out that year. Deep Blue had beaten Kasparov in 1997 by checking 200 million chess positions a second across 32 processors, learning nothing, which is architecturally the opposite of everything that works now.
The actual event of 1999 was somewhere else entirely. On 11 October, two months after the eclipse, Nvidia shipped the GeForce 256 and coined the word GPU. It was sold to teenagers for videogame graphics. Nobody connected it to thinking machines, because there was no connection to make. Its descendants are the literal hardware the whole thing runs on.
Kurzweil's record is worth being precise about, because he is quoted constantly and graded generously. An independent review of 172 of his 1999 predictions for 2009 found 42 percent true or weakly true. His own grade for the same set was around 94 percent. In 2002 he put 20,000 dollars against Mitch Kapor that a machine would pass a rigorous Turing test by 2029. That bet is still open.
The scoreboard, honestly: he was roughly right about the shape and badly wrong about the mechanism. He predicted images projected into the retina. We got glasses. He predicted machines that pass for human, and in 2025 a study found GPT-4.5 with a persona was judged human 73 percent of the time. What he did not predict, and what nobody in 1999 predicted, was that the thing would arrive as a polite text box that writes your emails, and that the loudest public complaint about a frontier model would be that its personality got worse.
The honest ledger
Nostalgia is cheap, so here is both columns. Genuinely better: you do not lose your friends for three days. You do not drive home at four in the morning with a paper map. Anyone can make a track, and some of them are good, and the ones who would never have afforded an Access Virus are making them.
Genuinely worse: nobody is entirely present. The field is a backdrop now, and the twenty-four exposures that made you choose what mattered are gone. Nick Cave, sent an AI song written in his style, called it a grotesque mockery of what it is to be human. He is not wrong about that particular song. He is also describing a feeling a lot of people have about a lot of things.
And the scene itself has an answer this year, which is not the one you would expect. Five or six eclipse gatherings were organised across Spain and Iceland for today. The largest, Iberia Eclipse near Vinuesa, planned for ten thousand people across four stages, was cancelled before the date. The biggest one that actually ran, on Iceland's Snaefellsnes peninsula with Imogen Heap on the bill, capped at 3,333 people.
In 1999 twenty thousand people turned up in a Hungarian field with photocopied flyers and no way to tell anyone they had arrived. In 2026, with every tool for organising a crowd ever invented, the ten thousand capacity event fell over and the winner holds 3,333. Make of that what you like. I have made something of it.
It comes back on 2 August 2027
Today was not a one off. It opened a run. On 2 August 2027 a total eclipse crosses southern Spain around Gibraltar and Tarifa and continues over North Africa to Egypt, with over six minutes of totality. That is nearly three times what Europe got today, and longer than anything in 1999. On 26 January 2028 an annular eclipse, the ring of fire, crosses Spain and Portugal again.
Which makes 2027 the real one. Six minutes, warm coast, a whole continent within driving distance, and eighteen months of notice. If a Solipse is going to happen again in our lifetime, that is the date it happens on.
Today's eclipse was number 48 of 72 in Saros 126 and the longest of the entire series. The shadow has no view on any of this. It has been keeping the same appointment for millions of years, it does not know about Napster or Suno or the GeForce 256, and it will be over Tarifa in fifty-one weeks whether or not we have worked out what to think about the machines.
